A Dentist’s 20-Year Pursuit of Public Health Accountability

A Dentist's 20-year Pursuit of Public Health Accountability

(Oct. 23, 2026) In episode 389, retired dentist Bill Osmunson, DDS, MPH, discusses his transformation from a longtime promoter of fluoride ingestion and water fluoridation to an outspoken advocate for ending these harmful and preventable exposures.

For more than 20 years, Bill has challenged the use of fluoride in public drinking water and mercury in dentistry. Through Washington Action for Safe Water, he has submitted dozens of petitions to Washington State agencies, pressing officials to confront the scientific evidence, reconsider longstanding policies, and protect the public—particularly children—from unnecessary toxic exposures.

We look at his most recent petitions to the Washington State Board of Health, including his request for prenatal fluoride advisories, concerns about fluoride exposure in infants fed formula prepared with tap water, and the Board’s responses. Bill also shares developments in his effort to have mercury officially designated as a poison in Washington.
